This week, we were proud to host Deputy Mayor for This week, we were proud to host Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, and Delia Awusi, the Mom-and-Pop Czar, and their team from Mayor Mamdani’s office to talk to them about a subject we are very passionate about; keeping New York City’s Garment District a thriving center for domestic manufacturing. The Garment District enables both small and large brands a seat at the table, and at its heart tells an American Story. For over a century, immigrants and American-born workers alike have been the backbone of American clothing manufacturing right here in New York City, providing the specialized skilled labor to support both established and up-and-coming American designers. Our founder and CEO, JR Morrissey, and team spoke to the group about the unique opportunities and challenges of working in the Garment District, and our ideas to keep the Garment Center the vibrant hub it is today. The tour, organized by our friend and longtime champion of the Garment Center, Nanette Lepore, visited sample rooms, production houses, pattern-grading houses and more and introduced the Mayor’s Office to the unique world of domestic garment manufacturing.
